HARTline Board of Directors member James Lovell was selected to carry the Olympic Torch through Downtown Tampa along Twiggs Street. On July 3, 1996, escorts drove alongside Mr.Lovell as he proudly carried the Olympic Torch among cheering crowds.
Matthew Campbell, HART Planner, was in the closing ceremonies on his mountain bike. Hart also loaned Atlanta five buses for a few weeks as they tried to transport the millions of people flocking to Atlanta for the Olympics.
The most southern point of Route 1 is the Marion Street Transit Parkway. Bus riders transfer to and from Route 1 at the Northern Terminal. Just south of the Northern Terminal on Florida Avenue is the African American Art Museum. It has one of the most wonderful collections of African American art in the country. There are many destinations along Florida Avenue including Florida Job Services at Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard. At Yukon Park-N-Ride you can transfer to Route 14 which takes you to Eastlake Square Mall or Route 16 which travels along Waters Avenue and Hanley Road.
Route 1 serves the Floriland Flea and Farmer's Market, where you can find some real bargains on weekends. At Fowler Avenue, you can transfer to Route 7 which will take you to Lowry Park or to the University of South Florida and surrounding area. The northernmost point of Route 1 is Monet Drive and North Boulevard.
People who don't have bus service are joining vanpools. The vanpools are sponsored by HART.
The passengers in the vanpool divide the cost. HARTline is able to keep the cost of the monthly fee of a vanpool to $50 per person per month, due to funding from the Florida Department of Transportation. Employers may also help subsidize your vanpool. Hillsborough County is one that will. The County encourages its employees to join a vanpool by reducing the monthly fee by an additional $20. Through this program, Hillsborough County employees pay approximately $30 per month to ride in a vanpool.
Some of the existing vanpools need riders. They are:
Ä St. Petersburg to USF area: work hours Mon-Fri, 7:30am to 4:30 pm
Ä Celebration and Lakeland to Downtown Tampa: work hours M-F, 7:30am-4:30pm
Ä Safety Harbor to USF Area: work hours Mon-Fri, 7:30am to 4:30pm
Ä Brandon to Downtown Tampa: work hours Mon-Fri, 7:30am to 4:30 pm
Ä Brandon to USF area: work hours Mon to Fri, 7:30am to 4:30pm
To join one of the above vanpools, or for more information call Bay Area Vanpool at 1-800-998-RIDE (7433)
